Building mentorship skills through structured dialogue
What started as live webinar experiments in 2022
Kygreatoutdoors emerged when three trainers noticed that mentorship conversations often stalled because participants lacked structured frameworks. They started hosting weekly webinars focused on specific dialogue techniques, testing different formats until they found what worked. Each session brought 15 to 40 people into a virtual room where they practiced asking better questions and listening more carefully.
The platform now runs webinars across four time zones, with facilitators who have logged over 800 hours of live instruction. Sessions focus on techniques like reflective listening, goal-setting dialogues, and feedback delivery. Participants join from corporate training programs, nonprofit organisations, and academic institutions, all working on the same challenge of making mentorship conversations more productive.
Webinars are recorded and archived, giving participants access to a library of past sessions where they can review specific techniques. The approach is simple: show up, practice with others, and refine your ability to guide conversations toward meaningful outcomes. No certifications, no completion badges, just repeated practice in a structured environment.
How do we structure webinar content?
Each webinar follows a framework designed around specific mentorship scenarios. Facilitators present a technique, demonstrate it in a live dialogue, then guide participants through practice rounds. Sessions last 90 minutes and include breakout exercises where participants apply what they've just seen. The focus is always on actionable skills, not theory.
Dialogue frameworks
Structured question sequences that help mentors guide conversations toward clarity and action. Each framework is demonstrated live, then practiced in small groups during the session.
Feedback mechanics
Techniques for delivering constructive feedback without triggering defensiveness. Participants practice phrasing, timing, and tone adjustments through role-play scenarios with immediate facilitator input.
Active listening protocols
Methods for confirming understanding and reflecting back what mentees communicate. Sessions include exercises where participants practice paraphrasing and validating statements in real-time exchanges.
Goal articulation drills
Exercises that train mentors to help mentees define specific, measurable objectives. Facilitators guide participants through question patterns that move conversations from vague aspirations to concrete plans.
Participation data from recent webinars
Between January and November, kygreatoutdoors facilitated 68 live webinars with participants from 23 countries. Each session included breakout practice rounds where attendees worked through mentorship scenarios in groups of three to five. Facilitators provided real-time feedback during these exercises, correcting phrasing and suggesting alternative approaches.
The platform archives all sessions, allowing participants to revisit specific techniques after the live event. Replay access includes timestamped segments, so users can jump directly to demonstrations of particular frameworks or exercises. This library now contains over 200 hours of recorded instruction and practice sessions.
